چکیده

Figure 3 The femoral rasp inserted to a sufficient depth in the canal via the piriformis fossa. The rasp acts as a guide while diathermy is used to demarcate the angle of neck osteotomy. lies medial to the greater trochanter of the proximal femur (Fig 2). This ensures only a blunt instrument is used to create an initial passage for the femoral rasp, minimising the risk of femoral perforation. With the neck still intact, a box chisel is used to create the necessary opening for rasp insertion. The rasp is sufficiently inserted to act as a visual guide for the neck cut. Monopolar diathermy outlines the neck osteotomy (Fig 3) and, following osteotomy and head removal, the rasp is inserted to the required depth.

Details of a Tendon–Sparing Posterior Approach in Hemiarthroplasty in the Treatment of Displaced Intracapsular Neck of Femur Fracture

This paper details a tendon–sparing surgical technique allowing hemiarthroplasty through a posterior approach in all cases whilst preserving the Quadriceps coxa. The SPAIRE (Sparing Piriformis and Internus, Repair Externus) technique, described by Hanly et al. for routine use in total hip replacement, theoretically offers the functional benefits of the posterior approach with reduced risk of di...

The effect of high dose antibiotic impregnated cement on rate of surgical site infection after hip hemiarthroplasty for fractured neck of femur: a protocol for a double-blind quasi randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND Mortality following hip hemiarthroplasty is in the range of 10-40% in the first year, with much attributed to post-operative complications. One such complication is surgical site infection (SSI), which at the start of this trial affected 4.68% of patients in the UK having this operation. Compared to SSI rates of elective hip surgery, at less than 1%, this figure is elevated. The aim ...

In-Hospital Outcomes after Hemiarthroplasty versus Total Hip Arthroplasty for Isolated Femoral Neck Fractures

Background:    Previous studies suggest total hip arthroplasty may have some benefits compared to hemi-arthroplasty for displaced intracapsular femoral neck fractures in patients more than 60 years of age. The primary research question of our study was whether in-hospital adverse events, post-operative length of stay (LOS) and mortality in patients 60 year of age or older differed between tot...

Comparitive Study of Fracture Neck of Femur Treated With Total Hip Replacement and Hemiarthroplasty in Elderly

Intracapsular fracture neck of femur have always presented great challenges to orthopaedic surgeons and remain in many ways today the unsolved fracture as far as treatment and results are concerned Intracapsular fractures are devastating injuries that most often affect the elderly. Intracapsular fractures are very rare in young individuals with normal bone. The incidence of intracapsular fractu...

Comparative study in surgical outcome of intracapsular fracture neck of femur in active elderly patients treated with hemiarthroplasty with Austin Moore's and bipolar prosthesis.

Fracture neck of femur is most commonly encountered fractures in elderly population. Hemiarthroplasty is generally considered to be the treatment of choice in most active elderly patients. However, there is inadequate evidence to support the choice between unipolar or bipolar prosthesis. This study was conducted to analyze the outcome regarding pain, hip function, complication and acetabular er...
